Public Design
Public building design is the building typology which we are most excited about at S-IAD. To us a public building includes commercial projects, industrial projects, and of course institutional projects ranging from schools and places of worship, to museums and civic centers. These projects allow the greatest number of people to experience the built environment which we create, allowing the art of design to come to life for the most users. Our Design Ethos
The true artistry of architecture comes from translating an ethereal or abstract concept into a tangible built reality. It comes from creating a narrative for the project which permeates into every detail of the design in the built form. As a result Architecture is able to become the most unique art form, one that people cannot only view, but touch, inhabit, and fully experience.
There is no greater opportunity to do so then with public building design. At S-IAD we aspire to create iconic buildings. Buildings which will stand out and become synonymous with a cities or communities identity. For every project we ask the question, what story are we telling? What is to be uniquely understood or experienced through a users interaction with the building?
Our Design Process
The design of a public building begins with conceptual exploration. Coming up with a concept will involve intensive site analysis to determine which factors are speaking to a potential concept. It will also involve collaboration with you, the client, to determine what is most important conceptually. What story do you want the project to tell? The degree to which conceptual exploration occurs is project specific. For example, for a commercial or industrial project, the concept is likely to be primarily pragmatic and functional. Based on creating an attractive building which will stand out compared to competitors and thereby attract customers to your building. However, for an institutional project such as a school or church, the concept may be more advanced. including elements of a more cerebral narrative to create a specific atmosphere for the project. Finally for a public building such as a museum, we will work in depth exploring a variety of potential narratives which will drive the design to become something truly iconic. At S-IAD, we pride ourselves in our ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with you to ensure the ideal and appropriate story is being told for your project.
Once we have confirmed the appropriate conceptual narrative for your project we then work to develop the design to become a tangible reality in the built environment. We use the conceptual narrative as the driving force for all design decisions to ensure cohesiveness and clarity of the concept. Throughout this process we collaborate with you to ensure the concept is coming to life appropriately. Moreover, we work to ensure the practical considerations such as budget and programming function are also being thoughtfully considered.
As always S-IAD will be excited to work with you towards any sustainable design goals which are important for your project. Public Design often has a requirement to hit certain criterion in energy efficiency etc. S-IAD is well equipped to ensure the project will be delivered successfully within whatever sustainable design paradigm is relevant to your project.
