Project Summary

The Mountain Retreat House was designed to be an escape, a getaway proudly sitting on the on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains. The home is oriented towards panoramic views of snow capped mountains to the southwest. This orientation is simultaneously advantageous to allow in an abundance of natural daylighting and passive solar heat gains. The home takes subtle steps down the mountain side in order to maintain a connection to the earth, while maintaining a main floor height that ensures views through and above the forest beyond. The home is organized with the primary public spaces on the main floor. These include a large kitchen and dining room as well as a large living area perfect for entertaining. The main floor opens out to a large four season room on the east side which will allow the residents to enjoy the outdoors year round. In addition, the home offers a covered deck area on the west side ideal for the barbeque season. Finally the partly covered sundeck will allow full enjoyment of hot summer days. The second floor of the home offers two primary suites as well as a guest room. These rooms will offer idyllic views of the mountains. Finally the basement is a mixture of public and private spaces. It is meant to be the primary hangout space for the families kids. Therefore it offers two large bunkrooms and ensuites. As well as a games and rec room. The home is clad in locally milled wood siding and stone to ensure the exterior of the home perfectly fits into its mountain surroundings.
